Smart Classroom Transformation at UPM’s Faculty of Engineering
Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) Faculty of Engineering has come a long way since its establishment in 1975. Originally known as the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, it started with just four departments. Over the years, it has evolved into one of Malaysia’s leading engineering schools, known for its excellence in education, research, and innovation. Today, the faculty comprises eight dynamic departments that offer a total of eight Bachelor programs and 34 postgraduate programs. The faculty currently serves a vibrant academic community of more than 3,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students combined.
A New Era of Learning with Smart Classroom Technology
With the increasing demand for hybrid learning—where both online and physical students can attend lectures simultaneously—the Faculty of Engineering began exploring modern solutions that could support this new model. Previously, classes were conducted purely online through video conferencing platforms. While functional, these setups lacked the interactivity, engagement, and seamless integration that hybrid learning environments require today.
Recognizing the need for a more advanced and flexible learning infrastructure, the faculty turned to smart classroom technology to enhance their teaching and learning experience. Their goal was to ensure that remote students felt as engaged and connected as those attending in person, without compromising the quality of education.
Why UPM Chose Arvia Solutions
To realize their vision, UPM collaborated with Arvia Solutions, a leading provider of audiovisual and ICT solutions in Malaysia. With their expertise in digital education tools and proven track record in deploying smart classroom systems, Arvia was the ideal partner for this transformation.
Arvia supplied a full-fledged smart classroom solution tailored to UPM’s needs. This includes high-definition interactive smartboards, professional-grade PTZ cameras for video capturing, wireless microphone systems for crystal-clear audio, and cloud-based video conferencing integration. These technologies work together to provide a seamless and intuitive learning experience for both lecturers and students—regardless of location.
Key Features of the Smart Classroom Setup
The smart classroom at UPM is designed to support real-time collaboration, remote learning, and multimedia teaching. Some of the key features include:
-
Interactive Smartboards: Lecturers can annotate, share content, and conduct interactive sessions in real-time.
-
PTZ Cameras: These cameras automatically track the lecturer’s movement, providing dynamic and professional-looking video streams for online students.
-
Wireless Audio System: Ensures that every word spoken is clearly transmitted to all participants.
-
Online Integration: Compatible with major video conferencing platforms, making it easy to manage remote participants.
-
Content Recording: Sessions can be recorded for students to review later, supporting self-paced learning.
Benefits for Lecturers and Students
With the implementation of smart classrooms, lecturers now have the tools to teach more effectively in a hybrid environment. They can switch seamlessly between physical and digital teaching materials, interact with both in-person and online students simultaneously, and maintain high levels of engagement throughout the class.
Students benefit from a more inclusive learning experience. Those attending remotely no longer feel disconnected from the classroom. They can ask questions, participate in discussions, and view the same content as their peers on campus. This helps bridge the gap between distance learning and traditional education.
Moving Forward: UPM’s Commitment to Smart Learning
UPM’s investment in smart classroom technology is a testament to its commitment to innovation and academic excellence. By embracing digital transformation, the Faculty of Engineering is better equipped to meet the evolving demands of education in the 21st century. The success of this project could serve as a model for other faculties and institutions aiming to enhance their hybrid learning capabilities.
As technology continues to shape the future of education, UPM remains at the forefront—leveraging smart solutions to create an engaging, effective, and forward-thinking learning environment.
